Your privacy & our house rules
No jargon, no tricks. Here’s exactly what we collect, why, and the simple rules for using Discover Glossopdale.
★ The 30-second version
If you only read one bit, read this one.
- We’re a free community noticeboard for Glossopdale. We help you find local groups, clubs, services, events and support, all in one place.
- We collect as little as possible. Mostly just an email if you sign up for updates, or your organisation’s details if you add a listing.
- We never sell your data. Not to advertisers, not to anyone. We’re a community interest company, not a data business.
- You’re in control. You can see, change or delete your data any time, just email us.
- Anything you post publicly stays public (like a listing or a review) until you ask us to take it down.
The full detail is below, in plain English. It’s longer, but it’s honest.
1 Who we are
Discover Glossopdale is run by Discover Glossopdale CIC, a community interest company registered in England and Wales (company number: currently being registered). We’re the “data controller”, which is the legal way of saying we’re the ones responsible for looking after your information.

2 The stuff we collect (and only this)
We don’t hoover up data. What we hold depends entirely on how you use the site. Here’s the honest, complete list:
| If you… | We collect… | In plain English |
|---|---|---|
| Just browse | Basic, anonymous visit stats (pages viewed, rough region, device type) | We use privacy-friendly analytics that don’t follow you around the web. No creepy tracking. |
| Sign up for updates | Your name and email address | So we can send you the occasional local update you asked for. Unsubscribe any time, one click. |
| List your group or business | Your organisation’s name, description, address, contact details and any photos you upload | This is meant to be public, it’s your listing on the directory. You choose what goes in it. |
| Submit an event | Event details plus a contact name and email | So we can check the event is real and get back to you if we need to. |
| Leave a review or comment | Your name (or chosen display name) and what you wrote | Reviews are public. Be fair and be kind, see the house rules below. |
| Email us | Your email and whatever you tell us | So we can actually reply. We keep it only as long as we need to sort out your query. |
That’s genuinely the lot. We don’t ask for your date of birth, we don’t want your banking details for a free listing, and we don’t build a secret profile on you.
3 Why we collect it, and our legal basis
Data protection law says we have to have a proper reason (“lawful basis”) for using your information. Here’s ours, laid out so you can check our working:
| What we do with it | Our lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Send you updates you signed up for | Your consent, you opted in, and you can opt out any time. |
| Publish and manage your listing or event | Legitimate interests, you asked to be listed, and a working directory is the whole point of the site. |
| Reply to your messages | Legitimate interests, you contacted us and expect a reply. |
| Keep the site secure and running | Legitimate interests, nobody wants a broken or spammy noticeboard. |
| Meet our legal and accounting duties | Legal obligation, sometimes the law simply requires us to keep certain records. |
6 Young people (16 and over)
You need to be 16 or older to create an account or sign up for updates. If you’re under 16 and want to get involved, ask a parent, carer or teacher to help, we’d love to have you, we just want a grown-up in the loop.
If you run activities for children or young people, extra safeguarding rules apply to your listing (like showing a general area rather than a child’s exact address). We’ll always put young people’s safety first.
7 How long we keep it
We don’t keep data hanging around forever. Straight answers:
| Type of data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Update / newsletter sign-ups | Until you unsubscribe, then we remove you promptly. |
| Your listing or event | For as long as it’s live. Ask us to remove it and it’s gone from public view straight away, and deleted from our systems within 30 days. |
| Messages you send us | Usually up to 2 years, so we’ve a record if you get back in touch, then deleted. |
| Accounting & legal records | As long as the law requires (typically up to 6 years for anything with a financial side, like a premium listing payment). |
8 Sending data outside the UK
We aim to keep your data in the UK or Europe. Occasionally a supplier we use (say, an email tool) may store data elsewhere. If that happens, we make sure there are proper legal safeguards in place so your data gets the same protection it would at home.
9 Your rights: the big six
Under UK data protection law you have real, enforceable rights over your information. Here they are without the legalese:
To use any of these, just email info@discoverglossopdale.org. It’s free, and we’ll reply within one month.
Not happy? You can complain
We’d always rather you told us first so we can put it right. But you have every right to complain to the UK’s data regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.
10 Changes to this policy
As the site grows, we may update this page. If we change anything important, we’ll say so clearly and update the date at the top. This version is dated 27 July 2026.
§ Using Discover Glossopdale
The simple deal for using the site.
What we are
Discover Glossopdale is a free community directory and events guide for Glossopdale and the surrounding High Peak. We’re a friendly signpost, we point you towards local groups, services and things to do. We’re not the organisations we list, and we can’t guarantee their opening times, prices or quality. Always check the details with them directly.
Being a decent human
By using the site you agree not to misuse it, no spam, no dodgy or illegal content, no harassing other people, and nothing that puts anyone at risk. We may remove content or accounts that break these rules.
Listing your group or business
Basic listings are free for community groups, charities and local businesses alike, that’s our mission. We also offer an optional premium listing for the price of a coffee a month (£5), which can include up to two photos plus extras like your logo and enhanced details. We use those funds to keep the directory free for everyone.
When you add a listing, you promise the information is accurate, it’s yours to share, and you’ll keep it up to date. New listings are checked before they go live. We can edit or remove listings that are wrong, out of date, or against these rules.
Reviews & comments
Honest reviews help the whole community. Keep them truthful, fair and based on real experience. No abuse, no made-up claims, no reviewing your own business. We may remove anything that crosses the line.
Your account
If you create an account, keep your login details safe and don’t let others use it. You’re responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
Links to other sites
We link out to lots of local organisations. Once you click away, you’re on their website under their rules, we’re not responsible for other people’s content or privacy practices.
Who owns what
The Discover Glossopdale name, branding, design and our own content belong to us. The content you add (your listing text, photos, reviews) stays yours, but by posting it, you give us permission to display and promote it on the site and app.
Our little shop Coming soon
When our Glossopdale-branded shop launches, full purchase terms (payment, delivery, returns) will be added here.
Our responsibility to you
We work hard to keep the site accurate and available, but we can’t promise it’ll be perfect or never go down. As far as the law allows, we’re not liable for losses that come from relying on a listing or from the site being unavailable. Nothing here limits our responsibility for things the law says can’t be limited.
Changes & the legal bit
We may update these terms from time to time; the current version always lives on this page. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any disputes go to its courts.
Information only, and our responsibility
Discover Glossopdale is an information and signposting service only. We do not provide support, advice, or emergency, medical, legal or financial services ourselves, and we are not responsible for the organisations, groups, businesses, events or services listed on the site. Listings and information are provided in good faith to help you find what you need, but we do not check, endorse or take responsibility for them, and we cannot guarantee that any information is accurate, complete, current or safe. Details, availability and prices can change at any time, so please confirm them directly with the organisation concerned.
Any decision to contact, visit or use a listed organisation or service is your own, and any goods, support or services you receive are provided by that third party and not by Discover Glossopdale. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Discover Glossopdale, its directors and volunteers accept no liability for any loss, injury, harm, cost or damage of any kind arising from the use of the site, from reliance on any information on it, or from contacting, using or dealing with any organisation, service or event listed. Nothing on the site is a substitute for professional advice. In an emergency, always call 999.
